The Spinning Mills

Regeneration Meets Transformation

As a beautiful and unspoiled relic from the site’s industrial peak, the transformation of a former cotton spinning mill factory celebrates the buildings’ original structure and unique industrial expression. It was identified very early in the project that both the exterior and interior of the building should continue to tell the history of the industrialization in the city of Vejle, while meeting the requirements of the new functions.

The regeneration of the project’s design, therefore, aims to preserve the cultural value of the site whilst introducing a contemporary feel to the buildings and the surrounding area.

A unifying feature of the regeneration is the use of surfaces and materials, whilst the existing fragmented context of the industrial buildings is maintained, reconfigured, and combined, creating a green symbiosis between cultural, commercial, and city life.

Today, the Spinning Mills is set as a popular, cultural meeting place for artists and creative professions, along with a museum and a theatre.

Additional new facilities include a multi-purpose hall, meeting rooms, and a café.

As a beautiful and unspoiled relic from the site’s industrial peak, the transformation of a former cotton spinning mill factory celebrates the buildings’ original structure and unique industrial expression.  It was identified very early in the project that both the exterior and interior of the building should continue to tell the history of industrialisation in the city of Vejle, thus the revitalisation reserves the cultural value of the building while introducing a contemporary feel not only to the building but also to the surrounding area.

The historic mills, rebuilt in the 1930s after a fire destroyed the original structures in 1886, reflect the industrial heritage of Vejle, an old town well-known for its cotton industry.

A unifying feature of the Spinning Mills’ regeneration is the use of surfaces and materials. Most notably, the striking, abstracted surface pattern using asphalt, gravel, concrete steel, and grass. This dynamic, geometric design, resembling a vast carpet, is intended to unify the differing elements contained within the site, thereby creating a strong sense of cohesion.

A green pedestrian route skirting the river wraps itself around the site, connecting the Municipal Park with the Music Theatre, and creating a natural urban space around the complex. The strongest visual element of the project is the introduction of a new plaza - a large public space surrounded by symbolic references to the city’s industrial past, which visually connects the mills to the rest of the city.

The existing facade of the main building has been partly replaced by large coloured glazed panels to create visual references to the city’s modern architecture. Additionally, the glass panels enhance the building and make the mills more visually prominent in the urban landscape, while simultaneously creating a strong visual connection between inside and out, and between the mill and the plaza.

Spinning Mills interior Reception Transformation

In the existing buildings, new elements and functions were integrated into "boxes" that were inserted into the structure. The material palette explores the solid/heavy versus the light/transparent, while claddings of natural plywood with visible mounting and compositions with coloured transparent/translucent glass and fibreglass introduce light into the rooms in a new way.

The Buehallerne form the heart of the complex, housing the main entrance, theatre, exhibition space, museum shop, café and multi-purpose hall. The existing fragmented context of the industrial buildings are all maintained, reconfigured and combined, creating a green symbiosis between cultural, commercial and city life.

Throughout the years, as the Spinning Mills have evolved into a favoured destination for the city's inhabitants, who enjoy the diverse offerings within the complex, new spacious requirements have emerged.
Consequently, the interior of the Spinning Mills has recently been adjusted to accommodate these needs, with a particular emphasis on wayfinding and the introduction of a museum shop.

The amenities in the Passage have been revamped, introducing seating nooks and graphically marked zones for furniture placement. Complemented by specialised lighting, these additions serve as spatial installations, carving out cosy corners within the expansive industrial halls.

Additionally, a new information desk has been installed to assist visitors across the entirety of Spinderihallerne.

The history of Spinderihallerne has been enriched through various means, including the installation of a large glass showcase in the Passage, where an old spinning machine is prominently displayed, recounting the history of the Spinning Mill.

The museum's entrance area has been reorganised to offer a glimpse into the exhibitions from the moment visitors step in. The entrance to the exhibitions themselves is accentuated with floor graphics and special lighting. A significant part of the reorganisation also involves a redesign of the museum shop.

Furthermore, flexible zones have been created to accommodate meetings and workshops within the Spinning Mill.

In addition to the Spinning Mills, the old boiler plant in Vejle is also a significant beacon in the recently rebuilt industrial complex, demonstrating a comprehensive and holistic renovation for the area, where both the Spinning Mills and Boiler House create identity and atmosphere for the vibrant creative environment.
