Stepping up from the waterfront like a rocky cliff, the Kulgrunden Residential on Denmark’s central island of Funen offers stunning views from its spacious terraces. The scheme for the complex is a distinctive pyramid-shaped design that provides ample natural light to reach public areas at ground level. The seven-storey, 8,500-square-metre housing complex focuses on the harbour’s potential as a residential and recreational urban space.

Kulgrunden Residental’s design puts people first, paying particular attention to the quality of space.

While the complex’s stepped pyramidal form provides a sculptural quality to the building, the large garden terraces are the hallmark of the design. The terraces activate the façade, enlivening it with texture, color, depth, and variety, while imbuing it with a human scale and a sense of calm and serenity.

The housing project is being designed to promote green and healthy living while preserving the environment and natural resources.

Sustainable measures such as optimized use of daylight, natural ventilation, and an efficient building envelope are incorporated together with the placement of green plants on selected facades, which will act as solar screening.

In recent years, the municipality of Middelfart has focused on creating a vibrant urban quarter that blends the area’s industrial cultural heritage with modern, high-quality architecture and active urban life.

With a history closely linked to the Little Belt strait between Funen and the Jutland Peninsula and the many porpoises living in its waters, the seaport town is promoting new initiatives in the harbor area that provide a unique opportunity for developments such as Kulgrunden Residential.
