A Beacon for Community, Well-being and Diversity

Skills City aims to become Europe’s most comprehensive and attractive community for young people in vocational education. Hands-on work creates experience, which is reflected in dialogue across professions, levels, and genders—uniting individuals and groups. The goal is to merge the city, landscape, social activities, and education into a vibrant whole that is far greater than the sum of its parts.

A key element in this vision is the Common House, designed to strengthen solidarity, democratic participation, and diversity among students. The house serves as a central gathering place where young people can engage in local democracy, socialize, share meals, celebrate milestones, and showcase their professional skills.

The building’s open circular design reflects the core values of the project, emphasizing openness and inclusivity. It supports the vision of a welcoming educational environment that embraces everyone, with no defined front or back, making it equally accessible from all directions. This circular form not only fosters a sense of connection but also integrates harmoniously with the surrounding natural landscape, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces and creating a seamless flow between the two.

The open layout invites people to gather, interact, and participate in activities throughout the year, making the community house a social hotspot. Built from natural, locally sourced materials, it is a sustainable and ambitious structure that offers a dynamic space with varied ceiling heights—both literally and metaphorically—providing ample room for personal and professional growth.

A Vibrant Community for Connection and Unity

Skills City Common House will offer a welcoming 1,400 m² open space for all students at Herningsholm Vocational School and High Schools.
The Common House, along with the Cultural Ribbon, is being developed as part of Skills City’s vision to become one of Europe’s leading hubs for vocational education.

A strong focus on fostering student communities and promoting democratic involvement in decision-making is central to Skills City’s mission. The new Common House is designed to create an educational environment where students are engaged and inspired to be part of a vibrant community that spans the area's diverse educational programs. At the same time, it will strengthen connections to the urban fabric of Herning and its beautiful surrounding landscape.

The city of Herning is located in the Central Jutland region of Denmark, with Herningsholm forming part of its broader educational and residential zones. The campus area, including Skills City, is a key feature of the city, serving both local and regional students.

Skills City offers a diverse range of vocational education options, including AMU courses, HHX, HTX, and Year 10 programs. The new Skills City Common House will foster a sense of community, well-being, and diversity among students as they explore their professional paths and transition into adulthood.

Herningsholm Vocational School and High Schools benefit from a unique location, situated on the edge of open countryside while remaining close to the densely built-up campus near town.

Located at the transition between city and countryside, the site is enriched by its proximity to the expansive green spaces of Lillelund Engpark and Holing Bæk, giving the area a distinctive character. The design highlights these natural features—embracing the flowing, organic landscape to build on and enhance the existing qualities of the environment.

The Cultural Ribbon weaves through the park like a winding path, linking Skills City both internally and with the surrounding nature. With its streams, meadows, and groves, it brings life and activity into the open space, connecting people and education.

Green pockets, activity areas, and meeting places for students, citizens, guests, and teachers create a cohesive and varied experience throughout the site.

The Common House will consist of two connected circular forms: a more closed part for sports, lectures and events and an open glass-framed part with a café, multi-room and exhibition area.

As the heart of the Cultural Ribbon the building is open towards all corners of the world and creates an atmosphere that invites people to connect and engage in social activities.

The connection between inside and outside play a central role for the identity of the Common House and use. It is designed as a covered lively 'rambla' on the Cultural Ribbon, where there is a view to park and landscape, and people can move freely through the house, with access from all sides.

The Common House serves as a focal point within the free-flowing Cultural Ribbon, acting as both an attraction and a hub of activity. It is a place where life thrives—both vibrant and serene. A quiet, peaceful oasis and open-air pavilion, yet also a hotspot for events, music, parties, and physical activity.

Its circular design is distinct and clearly defined, yet the Common House is radical in its openness—welcoming and receptive to the entire horizon, without a clearly defined front or back.

Along the entire length of the Cultural Ribbon, a brick edge rises from the pavement, forming a retaining plinth. These plinths provide spaces for brief stops if you're passing through the area on your way around Lillelund Engpark, or they serve as inviting destinations for longer stays, where you can meet friends in the green, peaceful surroundings—perhaps by the campfire.

The Common House is designed as a hybrid structure, combining materials to optimize both strength and aesthetics. Wood contributes to sustainability and functionality, being a renewable resource, while steel is used for its high strength and to provide greater flexibility in the design.

Craftsmanship, professional pride, and the interplay between various materials and disciplines are central not only to this project but to the entire vision of Skills City. This is the foundation upon which the Cultural Ribbon and the Common House are built.

The design is both diverse and inspiring for future craftsmen, while also being practical, constructible, and thoughtfully planned.
