As three shining ship lanterns, the monolithic volumes of the new Beijing Performing Arts Center contour one of three major cultural institutions designed to enrich the cultural fabric of the Beijing sub-centre, the Tongzhou district. In 2019, the Beijing Municipal Government relocated to the area, which houses close to a million citizens, and the Beijing Performing Arts Center holds a significant part in the revitalisation of the bustling waterfront.
Conceived as ‘containers of cultures’ the Beijing Performing Arts Center represents a regional reversal for the famous district of Tongzhou. Once the stopping point for boats along the Grand Canal on their way into Beijing, the canal side was scattered with traditional volumetric storehouses containing goods to be delivered to the citizens. The design of the Beijing Performing Arts Center rekindles the heritage of the UNESCO-listed site - slanting roofs pay homage to the traditional storehouses, while the building’s pleated, fan-like exterior resonates with the iconic sails of the original transport boats.
The volumes are deliberately expressed as separate elements, each building housing its own performance venue – an Opera House, a Playhouse, and a Concert Hall. The buildings are connected by a stepped, ramped and landscaped podium creating a new porous viewing platform for the Grand Canal, while simultaneously anchoring the project in the near context of the Beijing Performing Arts Center. Together with a new library and a museum, the Beijing Performing Arts Center constitute the cultural trinity in Tongzhou. Among the world's most ancient cities, Beijing holds a distinguished status as one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China. Thus, the city serves as a veritable treasure trove of culture, boasting an abundance of historic sites and landmarks while simultaneously representing China's swift economic ascent as a global metropolis. The Beijing Performing Arts Center bridges the rich past with the innovative present, embodying Beijing’s unique blend of tradition and progress.
