ARoS - The Next Level opening date revealed

After years of close collaboration with Aarhus Municipality, ARoS Art Museum and renowned artist James Turrell, we are excited to announce that ARoS – The Next Level will open on June 19th 2026.

The inauguration of As Seen Below – The Dome, a skyspace by James Turrell will coincide with next year’s summer solstice - the longest days of the year.

At Schmidt Hammer Lassen, this moment marks the culmination of more than a decade dedicated to designing and executing this boundary-pushing building and art installation.

No two skyspaces are alike, always contextual to their surroundings and place on earth. From the first sketch, however, this one exceeded its predecessors in scale. As James Turrell explains it:

‘’With As Seen Below I am shaping conditions rather than delivering an image. The architecture holds the sky close, so you can recognize that the act of looking is the work itself. Here light isn’t the description; it’s the substance you stand within. In this skyspace the day has weight, the evening has temperature, and the change belongs to you.’’

Final assembly of the Dome’s intricate lid construction is now underway, soon to be covered with earth and greenery as part of a new public park.
