Schmidt Hammer Lassen appointed to transform historic railway workshop in Copenhagen's Jernbanebyen

Schmidt Hammer Lassen, together with a strong team consisting of CCO Arkitekter, Nøhr & Sigsgaard, 1:1 Landskab, WSP, EKOLAB and Center for Bygningsbevaring i Raadvad, has been appointed lead consultant for the transformation of DSB’s former railway workshop in Jernbanebyen, Copenhagen. Commissioned by the City of Copenhagen, it is the municipality’s largest project of its kind to date.

The more than 100-year-old workshop hall will be transformed into a new school, daycare facility and cultural centre with associated outdoor areas as part of a larger development totalling approximately 25,500 m². It is one of the more complex transformation projects within the field, and a project typology SHL has many years of experience working with.

Vognværkstedet is not just a building — it is a piece of living industrial heritage that has shaped Copenhagen for more than a century. A significant part of the task will be to preserve and further develop these qualities while also addressing extensive contamination in both the building and the ground. In addition, the project involves creating flexible and well-functioning spaces for the many different user groups that will share the building.
