Inauguration and opening of New Aalborg University Hospital (NAU)

On 12 May, Her Majesty Queen Mary officially inaugurates New Aalborg University Hospital (NAU), marking the opening of one of Denmark’s largest and most ambitious healthcare developments.

Located in Aalborg East, the new university hospital has been developed as a future-oriented healthcare environment where treatment, research, education, and clinical practice are brought together within one cohesive setting. The project creates new opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration, knowledge sharing, and integrated patient pathways to benefit the entire North Denmark Region.

NAU is designed to support comfort, dignity, and wellbeing for patients, relatives, and staff alike. The architecture combines advanced healthcare functions with a clear and human scale, where daylight, views, landscape integration, and intuitive circulation contribute to a welcoming and accessible hospital experience.

Together with Aalborg University’s Faculty of Medicine (SUND), which was also developed by INDIGO, the project forms part of a comprehensive 330,000 m² masterplan creating an entirely new healthcare district in Aalborg. The hospital itself comprises 170,000 m² and has been designed with long-term flexibility in mind, allowing the building to adapt to future needs while maintaining a close connection to the surrounding landscape.

The project was developed for the North Denmark Region by Konsortium Indigo, consisting of Schmidt Hammer Lassen, LINK Arkitektur, Creo Arkitekter, NNE Pharmaplan, Royal HaskoningDHV, Brix & Kamp, Sweco, and OJ Consulting Engineers, with BJØRK & MAIGÅRD and Søren Jensen as subconsultants.
