Groundbreaking for Valby Library

Earlier this month, Byggeri København, the City of Copenhagen’s municipal client and construction organization, marked the groundbreaking for the new Valby Library at Toftegårds Plads. The project marks a new phase in the development of the area and will become a key element in the transformation of one of Copenhagen’s largest public squares.

The library is constructed using reclaimed brick, while the roofscape will be planted with vegetation that manages and delays rainwater runoff while supporting local biodiversity. The building will be located along Vigerslev Allé, where its connection to the square is emphasised by a large staircase featuring seating areas and places for people to gather. The steps continue through the open façade as a scenographic element extending into the library, creating a direct relationship between the building, the landscape, and the life of the square.

Located along one of the city’s major access routes, the library will become a natural focal point for the many thousands of people who pass through the area daily on foot, by bicycle, or by car. At the same time, the library and the revitalised Toftegårds Plads will serve as an important meeting place between the historic Valby and the newer urban development areas to the south.

The new library will replace the existing Valby Library and provide modern, flexible spaces with open library areas, reading and study rooms, children’s spaces, and meeting facilities. Together with Valby Kulturhus, Kraftwerket, and future student housing, the library will form part of a new cultural hub in the district.

The project is being developed with Byggeri København as client and is expected to be completed in early 2028.
