Schmidt Hammer Lassen has been appointed lead consultant for the restoration and transformation of two heritage buildings totalling approximately 7,500 m² in Universitetsbyen, Aarhus.

The opening completes The Next Level, the museum’s major underground expansion, and marks the culmination of more than two decades of collaboration between the City of Aarhus, ARoS and Schmidt Hammer Lassen.

Topping-Out Ceremony Marks New Milestone for Solterrasserne

On 3 June, a topping-out ceremony was held for Solterrasserne in Valby together with the Social Services Administration, Byggeri København, and DSP PLUS (Jakon / EKJ / Schmidt Hammer Lassen). The project transforms the former residential care home for the visually impaired, originally completed in 1976, into 54 contemporary homes and is expected to achieve DGNB Silver certification. 

Groundbreaking for Valby Library

Earlier this month, Byggeri København, the City of Copenhagen’s municipal client and construction organization, marked the groundbreaking for the new Valby Library at Toftegårds Plads. The project marks a new phase in the development of the area and will become a key element in the transformation of one of Copenhagen’s largest public squares.

Schmidt Hammer Lassen, together with a strong team consisting of CCO Arkitekter, Nøhr & Sigsgaard, 1:1 Landskab, WSP, EKOLAB and Center for Bygningsbevaring i Raadvad, has been appointed lead consultant for the transformation of DSB’s former railway workshop in Jernbanebyen, Copenhagen. Commissioned by the City of Copenhagen, it is the municipality’s largest project of its kind to date.

New Hvidovre Hospital welcomes first patients

On October 24th, Danish Minister of Health, Sophie Løhde cut the red ribbon and officially inaugurated the New Hvidovre Hospital building, Center A.

Center A encompasses 43,000 inviting square meters, featuring 244 attractive single rooms with space for family members and numerous green oases between departments, creating a bright, open, and welcoming atmosphere. Center A features the Emergency Department, Emergency X-ray and Scanning Unit, the Department for Children and Adolescents, the Cardiology Department, and the Maternity Ward, welcoming the first patients on November 3rd.

Schmidt Hammer Lassen Wins Competition to Design Skills City’s New Common House

We’re thrilled to share that we’ve won the competition for Skills City Common House in Herning. Together with LYTT and Niras, we’ve developed a building that embraces and invites the unique landscape of the Herningsholm area into the heart of the design.

Skills City Common House will offer welcoming spaces inside out for social activities across professional disciplines and interests. A place for students to gather after school hours in close connection to nature and to each other.

Zoning Plan for Fisketorvet - CPH Mall approved

The zoning plan for Fisketorvet – CPH Mall has been approved by Copenhagen’s City Council. This means that work to develop Fisketorvet into an attractive destination, capitalising on its unique location by Copenhagen Harbour and its role as a major infrastructural hub, can continue.

Fisketorvet will be integrated into its surroundings and take an active role as a catalyst for commercial, social, and recreational activities. By rethinking the shopping centre experience with a holistic approach, it caters to a broader range of users and maximises the potential of the space it occupies within our shared city. The local plan, for example, addresses the need for active frontages along most of the perimeter, creating dynamic spaces around the entire site.

Biogenic materials: "Pilefacade" receives work grant from the Danish Association of Architects and the Dreyers Foundation

In the summer of 2024, the Danish Architects Association and the Dreyers Foundation sent out the Open Call: Implement Materials focusing on the use and development of biogenic materials.

Together with Pilebyg, facade engineer Staticus and design studio "moow, our project "Pilefaçade" is one out of four projects to receive grants allowing us to continue our effort to scale this material in premanufactured facades. This opens new possibilities for use in multi-storey buildings, taking advantage of the precision and quality of off-site manufacturing techniques, and represents a new field for willow and other biogenic materials that provides an opportunity for large-scale implementation.

Competition win! SHL to develop new mixed-use neighbourhood

Together with Assar, we've won the competition to develop a new vibrant neighbourhood in Hollerich, Luxembourg. Our winning proposal envisions an area shaped by the city’s unique topography and distinctive location. Merging multiple functions the new neighbourhood will offer a rich and welcoming environment, facilitating living, working, and accessing basic needs within a 15-minute walk or bike ride from home.

The vision for the neighbourhood involves transforming it into a distinctive district with a strong sense of identity, emphasising community, cultural richness, social cohesion, and well-being. A new urban focal point and infrastructural node in the cityscape catering to a wide range of future users.

Living Design

Living Design is our term for integrating a holistic social and ecological design methodology into our work in creating meaningful, enduring spaces, which is inherently tied to the strength of collaboration and cross-disciplinary partnerships. Our methodology is geared towards creating a unified vision among all stakeholders, which acts as a compass for identifying critical pathways and guidance throughout the project development phases.

Our innovative "practice cards" link our extensive collective knowledge database with relevant precedents, serving as an adaptable resource for the project team in search of inspiration and tangible examples of sustainability in practice.

We critically examine project needs alongside early alignment between stakeholders to uncover hidden opportunities and develop a context-specific foundation for design that guides decision-making processes where stakeholders can see their contributions reflected in the design process and project outcomes.

A Culture of Learning

All our staff participate in and develop professional forums of knowledge sharing, contributing to nurturing our joint creativity and skill set. This includes training session on the latest technologies, seminars on sustainable food systems, water-colouring, and hand-sketching courses and much more. Through mentorship, we actively nurture talent throughout the organisation, creating opportunities for continuous growth for the individual, for project teams, and for Schmidt Hammer Lassen as a whole.
