The Audiovisual Immersion Lab (AVIL), housed within the Department of Electrical and Photonics Engineering at DTU, marks a significant milestone in the department’s mission to spearhead cutting-edge, application-driven research. DTU Elektro, with its 300+ researchers working across areas such as acoustics, photonics, robotics, and health technology, aims to foster innovation that addresses global challenges—from sustainable energy to secure digital infrastructure
AVIL brings these ambitions to life: located within the existing building, the new lab comprises an anechoic chamber and four listening booths, lined with one-metre-thick acoustic wedges. A spherical array of 64 loudspeakers enables nuanced simulation of soundscapes in conjunction with visual stimuli—allowing researchers to explore fundamental questions about spatial hearing and multisensory perception.
The facility offers researchers, educators, students, and visitors at DTU unparalleled opportunities to study sound and imagery and to deepen understanding of human perceptual processes.
