Description:
The new Memel city is a new urban neighbourhood that ties into the existing fabric of the city. The existing urban grid of the old and the historic city is copied to the site as well as the scale of the old town is adopted – a small size grid that ensures a dense and compact city with a human scale like the existing city.
The scale of the development will relate to the neighbouring city quarters of the Old Town and the slightly higher scale of the historic city. The denseness will provide shelter against the environment and make an ideal habitat for a community-based society.
The new urban area will be a mixed use neighbourhood, where each function is carefully located according to environmental and physical context. The residential areas will be located to the southeast-southwest where they will enjoy direct sunlight throughout the day and panoramic views of the old town, the water and the Curonian Spit beyond. The retail area will be located in the centre, where the majority of the flow from the city to the water will take place. Finally, the northern office buildings will constitute an effective shield against the noise, the cold winter wind and visual contact to the industrial harbour.
The new Memel city neighbourhood will become a destination in itself, an area that will service both local inhabitants as well as citizens of the larger Klaipeda area. A high quality of public urban spaces is required to make it an open and democratic neighbourhood. The new urban space will open up and connect the city to the water for all inhabitants of Klaipeda.
