Description:
This masterplan for a mixed-use development on the seafront at Straume to the west of Bergen will create a dense and distinctive urban development linking three newly created islands and comprising 240 residential units as well as 3,000 square metres of commercial space, 4,500 square metres of hotel facilities and a new sailing marina.
The new development is situated at the foot of Straume’s 40-metre high cliffs in a prominent position on Straume Sound. Responding sensitively to this dramatic setting, this pilot proposal highlights the dramatic relationship between the mountains and the sea.
The masterplan proposes up to nine-storey buildings at the periphery of the scheme facing out across the Straume Sound, and single storey housing facing towards the cliffs.
The scheme’s environmental strategy will feature roof-mounted solar panels as well as heat pumps which take advantage of the relatively stable temperature of the sea water. In addition, glazed balconies will act as a double-skinned façade, providing passive solar heating for the complex. The masterplan proposes a mix of wooden clad residential properties of various designs and scales, creating a diverse architectural and social environment. The aspiration is to create a dynamic urban environment where people can live close to their work, friends and family, while at the same time in direct contact with nature.
