Description:
The brief was to design the Changsha Riverfront Cultural Park on a 30 hectare site in the Xinhe Delta just north of central Changsha and bounded to the west by the main river Xiangjiang and to the north by the tributary Liuyang.
This new dynamic cultural hub called for the design of a concert hall, a museum and a library of respectively 15,000 square metres, 25,000 square metres and 20,000 square metres, as well as the preparation of a sketch plan for a five-star hotel and a 115,000 square metres large conference centre. The brief also involved the drawing up of a regional development strategy for the area on the eastern side of the city.
The three cultural buildings are articulated as a light floating composition placed on the sculptural plateau, which also serves as a dike holding back the tidal river. The three buildings are placed in the northern corner of the site, forming a gateway to the entrance to Changsha.
While the exteriors of the buildings are clad with the same semi-transparent titanium skin, the spatial experiences offered by the interiors of each will have a distinctive individual character. The conference centre and the hotel are situated at the southern end of the site.
