Description:

Barcode is the masterplan for a central site in Oslo, developed by the world-famed architect Winnie Maas in conjunction with Dark Architects.

The housing development that schmidt hammer lassen architects has designed takes its cue from Barcode and the design approach suggested by the masterplan. In evolving Barcode’s concept, the aim has been to bring light and air into the high-density development, to open up to the fjord and to create new kinds of communities.

The housing development comprises three buildings. While the theme of the first is forests and mountains, the keynote of the middle building is salt, crystals and air, and the last of the buildings draws its inspiration from earth, fire and heat. Each of the three blocks has a unique sustainability profile that is supported by the individual design of each building.

Relatedly, a common denominator for the development as a whole is the adoption of an ambitiously high and internationally recognized rating system for sustainable building projects.
