In 2009, schmidt hammer lassen architects and contractor E. Pihl & Son won the D&B competition for the new administration building, which lies adjacent to the existing municipality office of Aarhus. The latter office building is also designed by schmidt hammer lassen architects and was completed in 2005.

The environmental ambitions of the municipality of Aarhus are the key drivers for the new project. The build¬ing has 1,100 m² of solar cells for the production of electricity and 420 m² of solar thermal panels for absorption cooling and heating water. Recycled glass from bottles is used for the façade panels, and 96% of the materials from the demolished building on site are reused. Insulation consists, among others, of vacuum-insulation panels that are very slender and reduce the overall thickness of the walls considerably.

The complex is extremely flexible and yet of a fully integrated classic modern composition. The building consists of two parallel wings of 2-3-storey buildings connected by towers containing stairs, elevators, lavatories and washrooms. Consequently, the office areas are free from functional units and are flexible to any sort of organization over time.
