The jury motivated their choice of The Spinning Mills like this: “The refurbishment of the old Spinning Mills demonstrates how it is possible to combine new and old in a fruitful and exiting way. The contrast between new and old is seen in the state-of-the art materials such as bright coloured glass and steel. Aside from the facades, bright coloured skylights are installed in order to break up the large surface of the roof. The potential of the existing buildings has been thoroughly catered to through out the renovation. The entrance is marked by rough concrete walls which suits the industrial style. The exterior area has also been given thorough thought offering a sense for details which makes the area eventful, marking the transition between inside and outside.”
The renovation of The Spinning Mills is today the setting of a popular, cultural meeting place, where artists and creative businesses unfold along with a museum and a theatre. Additional facilities include a multi-purpose hall, meeting rooms and a café. The existing fragmented context of the industrial buildings is maintained, reconfigured and combined, creating a green symbiosis between cultural, commercial and city life.
