Planning approval for Library Learning Centre in Sheffield

– Apr 15th, 2008

The building adheres to the Scandinavian architectural tradition with carefully considered use of natural daylight and openness. Also, it scores high in terms of environmental strategy – the new building will be sustainable and energy efficient with due attention paid to life cycle cost and reduction of maintenance liabilities.

The Library Learning Centre is part of the overall development of the new Chaucer Buchanan District Centre in North Sheffield. This will be a mixed-use urban environment with housing, shops and a new public square surrounding the library.

"The project represents the revitalisation of an area that really needs a boost. We aim to create a unique, friendly, open and modern urban centre which will help to encourage outdoor activities and life in general at street level. The planning approval for the Library and Learning Centre is a very important step in achieving this ambition,” says Stephen David Willacy, partner in schmidt hammer lassen architects.
