Tightly connected to the green urban park of The Apothecary Garden, the sculptural tower of Borgen will become a new urban landmark and a generator of housing, shopping, municipal services and parking.

Kim Holst, Partner at schmidt hammer lassen architects, explains: “Borgen will become a vibrant place and a generator for the beating heart of the city centre. Due to the size of the complex and its position in the immediate centre of the city, it has been important to the architects that Borgen respects and adapts to the qualities of its surroundings and is perceived as forward-looking architecture.”

The main part of the building stock appears in mortar washed white painted brick. Cantilevered boxes in dark perforated plates of steel cut through the volume adding to a vivid and dynamic facade, where light and shadow play and let the building communicate with the scale of the surrounding buildings. One of the main entrances is levelled with the street where a 10-meter tall roofed glass section faces The Apothecary Garden and opens the building towards the public.

The other main entrance, also at street level, binds the City Centre together in an exciting two-storey shopping centre with a new upper storey roof car park. Two subterranean parking levels are reached via ramps from the street and ensure 600 parking spaces.

The construction site will be the biggest in South Jutland. When the buildings are finished 500-700 new employees will have found work at Borgen, which will accommodate 65-70 shops. Tenants will begin to move in during the summer of 2013 and the opening will take place in the fall of 2013.
