New retail centre in Vejle, Denmark
Schmidt Hammer Lassen - SHL
Vejle's new shopping centre Bryggen (The Wharf) opened its doors on April 13. Bryggen has a distinctive, rust-red façade in Corten-steel with various geometric shapes.
The building’s strikingly ‘raw’ profile is in marked contrast with its immediate urban context and breaks with traditional shopping centre design as we know it.
The 33,000 square metres large building has a distinctive “fold”, creating four façades which break down into smaller surfaces, giving the building a light and dynamic appearance.
In the evening, the building will become a beacon, with light streaming out from the many openings and perforations in the façade.
About the centre
Bryggen offers 80 new shops, cafés and restaurants. Depending on the season and the weather, the activities within the centre can expand to interact with the river and the pedestrian street beyond.
The majority of units have been pre-let prior to opening.
