10x10 Plan aims to revitalize Copenhagen’s Metropolzone as the city’s new meeting point
Schmidt Hammer Lassen - SHL
Currently, the metropole zone isn’t a place where people tend to linger. It is a touchdown area for tourists dominated by the major six-lane traffic artery H. C. Andersens Boulevard. At schmidt hammer lassen architects, we propose more meeting places and more successful urban spaces – both for Copenhageners and for visitors in the city. A Barcelona model is the way forward: ten new urban spaces to be developed over the next ten years.
The idea behind the new urban spaces, the first of which can be realized within a mere two-year timeframe, is that they should act as catalysts for the city development in Copenhagen.
”Development should result from a ripple effect – as was the case in Barcelona, for instance, where the ripple effect development strategy was deployed very successfully. Through dynamic private public partnerships, a worn down historic city was transformed into the exciting, vibrant metropolis we know today,” explains Morten Holm, partner at schmidt hammer lassen architects.
The specific ideas underpinning the 10x10 Plan include Kalvebod Lagoon – breathimg new life into the Kalvebod Brygge district. A new promenade will be constructed with a sun deck and facilities for water sports. Providing a mooring place for small boats and dinghies, a key priority will be to accommodate kayak clubs and outdoor activities.
The historic axis – the areas around the National Museum of Denmark and the Glyptotek will be linked. The existing parking areas will be decommissioned and a new plaza will be created together with galleries and cafés. The plaza will host a rotating programme of art installations and displays.
New Langebro – essentially an extension of the existing bridge. The idea is to expand the bridge through the construction of outrigger bridges in two levels, creating protected zones for both pedestrian and cycle use. The redesigned bridge will open up entirely new views of the Copenhagen cityscape from the seaward side.
schmidt hammer lassen architects is heading up a multi-disciplinary team consisting of Bosch & Fjord, Moe & Brødsgaard, ReD Associates and a core group of external advisors.
The visions in the 10x10 Plan for the Metropolzone may be viewed in their entirety from today and over the next fortnight in the ceremonial hall of Copenhagen’s Town Hall.
