Description:
The Thor Heyerdahl College of Further Education, the largest school of its kind in Norway, has integrated a 6,500 m2 multi-flexible international sports arena which seats up to 4,000 spectators.
During the day, the arena is used by the school’s culture and sports curricula, while in the evening the arena is used as the home of the local handball team and for larger events, concerts etc. Like the rest of the school, the arena plays a central role as the city hub of sports and culture for the students and the community. The school and the arena are catalysts for the integration of the community into the local teaching and learning sphere.
During tournaments, the building fits up to 4.000 spectators. On a normal school day, 50% of the seats, the side seats, are pushed back like drawers to turn the space into respectively two indoor-football fields, two handball fields or 4 basketball fields.
The school and the handball arena are connected through a ”bridge”, that on the 1st floor makes the connection with the school rooms and on the ground floor serves as a small foyer for the public.
