Description:
This complex, located at the highest point in the city, will provide Lund with a prominent new landmark, a forum for business executives and cultural figures attending meetings and conferences as well as a civic hub with a busy programme of exhibitions or concerts.
The complex steps up from one to fifteen storeys, culminating in a high-rise hotel at the north-eastern corner of the site which will give the new development a strong visual presence. The scheme is designed to ensure a seamless cross-flow of activities, allowing hotel guests to co-exist and interact with more transient restaurant guests or spa visitors seeking peace and quiet in the wellness centre.
The plan for the new centre is based on the idea of five distinct components or stones and weaving these disparate functions into a coherent whole which has been the overarching challenge of the project. The scheme accommodates modern conference facilities and generous break-out spaces, a flexible multi-purpose hall for exhibitions and trade fairs, a three-storey jacuzzi and wellness centre, as well as a hotel and a restaurant at ground level. The fifth element consists of the very significant back of house facilities including kitchens, laundries and administration accommodation which are required to support the complex’s many activities.
Emphasis has been placed on sustainable solutions; the new complex will have an energy consumption of 20-25 percent lower than the general standard for comparable projects. In architectural terms, the building is very much in the Scandinavian tradition, with a carefully considered use of natural daylight and openness. The complex is deliberately designed to appear welcoming, inviting passers-by to step inside, blurring the distinction between inside and outside. The design presents a coherent and dramatic sculptural whole, in a marked contrast with the gentle, undulating landscape.
