Description:
The DGI Building which is situated on the site of the Danish State Railways’ former main engineering shops in central Aarhus ushers in an entirely new style of sports centre. The centre occupies three conjoined halls that date back to 1910 and takes its design cue from the industrial character of the existing building, that is, exposed structures, open spaces, extensive skylights – and a robust, no-nonsense materials palette.
The former engineering complex now incorporates a variety of covered courts, halls and spaces for sports and cultural events. A new building houses the reception, offices and meeting rooms for DGI’s administration. The DGI Building is aesthetically pleasing and visually stimulating to the core.
The new functions are designed to provide a discreet and sensitively judged complement to the complex’s original rough-at-the-edges façades and exposed structures. New walkways and balconies of steel and timber along with new, light-toned wood floors create a warm complement to the ceilings and the white walls, whose technical installations are simple and visible.
