Description:
Beijing Hotel needed to expand to serve as an official hotel for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. The proposal for an expansion of Beijing Hotel comprises three building projects on three lots, each with a different function.
In the first lot which has direct access to the important shopping street Wangfuijing, a shopping centre including office accommodation and restaurants is located. The middle lot is home to a conference centre and hotel apartments in a U-shaped terraced block. An overhead walkway connects the conference centre and the hotel apartments with the existing hotel. The third lot adjacent to the Forbidden City incorporates luxury residences and a communal, green courtyard space.
The entire façade consists of open and closed elements in large, vertical granite-clad ribs. A dark granite wall runs through the entire complex and ties the three buildings together.
On the inside, the contrast between the dark granite wall and the light-toned stepped elevations is both original and full of visual interest. A number of architectural themes drawn from the Chinese landscape are featured along the rock wall including the rocky cave, the river, the bamboo forest, the paddy fields and the lake region.
