Description:
As a symbiosis between nature and culture, the landscape and the city, the past and the present, the Aust Agder Cultural History Museum grows out of the rocks and becomes a condensation of the rich natural and cultural context in which it is located.
The building is situated around existing routes in the landscape which tie the museum galleries to the city, the landscape and the large park area, blurring the boundaries between inside and outside. The routes allow the visitor to stroll through the exhibition galleries, on their way experiencing the landscape, the rock, the water and the light – the elements of which the city is made – and with the ethereal white architecture in between.
The building manifests itself as a cluster of crystalline wooden galleries reminiscent of the old town timber buildings climbing up the hills. The building, nestling into the mountainside, will be a like a glowing mountain crystal marking the entrance to the city.
With the human scale building elements adjusted to the existing historic buildings on the site, the museum signals a democratic, open architecture with roots in the local traditions and building scale, a building that at the same time remembers the past as well as looks forward as a modern proactive cultural institution.
