Description:
The subject of the competition was to develop a master plan for the approximately 9.8 hectare Cultural-Art and Museum Complex, Mystetskyj Arsenal, under incorporation of the early 19th century Arsenal building and the historic and protected rampart foundations.
The task was also to present the design of the new buildings and facilities of this culture district, for example The Center for Ukrainian Music with concert halls, The Museum of Contemporary Art and The International Center for Cinema and Screen Arts.
The project’s underlying and challenging idea was to place the new culture complex in the middle of history. In this way, the design functions as a meeting point where the origins of Ukrainian history and future are integrated.
The masterplan suggests a cultural campus, which works as an expansive outdoor lobby united by a common tapestry – a delicate urban floor composed of a variation of local basalt and granite. A new setting is thus created, which integrates itself into the campus site and pledges change and a new beginning. The individual cultural buildings including the Museum of contemporary art and the concert hall were delicately placed in the Cultural Campus in accordance to finely tuned spatial sequences, thus creating unique vibrant national venues entwined with plazas, alleys and urban fabric creating a setting of national importance.
