Description:
The competition proposal to the Royal Theatre's new Playhouse is located at Kvæsthusbroen in Copenhagen in the transition zone between the city and the water. In contrast to the city’s prevailing orthogonal principle, the new Playhouse takes on an unusual, organic and free form that effortlessly connects with the water and the horizon. Behind the sculptural form of the façade, however, the building has the opposite movement. Here, as in the city, the different functions are linked in a right-angled composition.
In terms of function, the total volume of the Playhouse is essentially divided into two parts – an extroverted area with the entrance, different intervals, a promenade and a restaurant, from where the audience moves into the auditorium, and an introverted area with rehearsal rooms, dressing rooms and green rooms for the artistes and personnel.
The new Playhouse has a light and floating expression. A façade band in light metal begins as a horizontal bridge from the mainland, then rises up into the vertical position and swings around the building. With its varying slopes and projections, the unbroken band creates a façade that employs movement as gesture.
