Description:
The Crossroads is a secondary school with integrated business and cultural centre functions. The Crossroads forms a focal point for the entire local community – an intersection where the paths of students, visitors, tourists and business executives can cross, as well as those of all the residents of the local community who make use of the school and its cultural facilities.
The building lies enclosed by woodland, but is associated with the nearby village of Sætre. The building is open, expressive, dynamic and invites diversity – a place where all paths meet. The architecture emphasises the building’s function as a hub for the entire upland area, with building volumes which, like a compass rose, point out in all directions towards its surroundings.
The building is located on a mountainside plateau, with a view of the undulating, falling terrain, the forest and the fjord. It writes itself into the natural landscape, the formations of which are left undisturbed in the vicinity of the school, while its characteristic, sharply-defined profile forms a contrast to the diverse forms of nature.
Inside the school, a large open atrium rises up, creating visual contact between the building’s storeys. The atrium at the heart of the school links to the cultural hall, the library, the café and the stage for dancing and other performances.
