Description:
Testrup Folk High School is set in the East Jutland landscape, in the village of Testrup south of Aarhus. The school’s magnificent main building and the three-winged complex framing the courtyard delivered the starting premise for the new music building. The freestanding music building contains several rehearsal rooms, ensemble rooms, a studio and a modest-sized music performance hall.
The building is of buff brick, which is a reference to the school’s existing buildings and is a pervasive design element, featuring both on the façade and on the interior. The brickwork on the façade consists of stretcher bonds surmounted by a series of soldier courses.
All rooms feature large areas of glazing that open out onto the garden and village, making visible the pulse and buzzing life of the school. The lobby wraps itself round a timber-clad cabinet containing storerooms, a technical service room and toilets. The extensive timber and façade elements are made from oregon pine, the floors are of granite or oak, while the walls and columns are in buff brick. The bricks themselves are designed to enhance the acoustics.
