Description:
Situated in Oxford’s Science Area, CRL 2 will be the new exposition front for the Department of Chemistry. Containing state-of-the-art labs and teaching spaces, CRL 2 will attract scientists, students and investors from all over the world. The proposal emphasises this ambitious outreach and seeks to support the synergy between CRL 2 and a wide professional and academic community.
The form of the building is simple and strong; an explicit response to its city context and the requirement to maximise the capacity of the site. The building is split in the centre along its longitudinal direction, creating an impressive atrium – rising throughout the building – so that you from the entrance areas have a magnificent view of the many components of the building. With four floors above ground and two below, the functions of the building are distinctly separated between research labs and offices.
A simple structure characterises the interior arrangement in consideration for the placement of the labs and essential service cores. The volume of each of the two linear main buildings is divided into four smaller sections and this structure creates a significant signature in the exterior as well as the interior design. The building corresponds with the surrounding urban spaces in the campus area.
