Description:
In the new Lisbjerg School, set on a sloping site at the heart of Lisbjerg, you can be both down amid the bustling town and high up in the building, enjoying views over Lisbjerg and Aarhus. The project integrates three functions – parish community centre, village hall and school – into a complex but cohesive geometry.
The fundamental architectural premise is the sculptural character of the building: a monolith that combines lightness and gravitas. Weight is conferred by a solid two-storey brick base upon which four buildings of differing heights are placed. A counterpoint is provided by the visual lightness of the façade, composed of zinc-clad vertical elements and fenestration.
The school building and the common base are unified by a ramp that zigzags up through the six storeys; an eye-catching feature which in a single sweep mediates connections to both interaction and teaching areas. Not merely a circulation corridor the ramp is also a sloping, vibrant activity surface for interaction and play – anchoring the school not only functionally and architecturally but also socially. It culminates at level six in a lounge which sports views across the town and to Aarhus. Phase one comprises the unifying base and two buildings. Phase two will see the construction of two further buildings.
