Description:

This sculptural mixed-use scheme comprises two five-star international hotels, conference facilities, exhibition areas, a new central library, restaurants, cafés and retail in a single dynamic complex.

The two intersecting towers take the form of a vast X, creating a vibrant connection between the historic centre and the Tivoli Gardens. The two towers which are 97 and 147 metres high, respectively, rise up from a single base structure. The western tower corresponds to the height of the nearby SAS Hotel designed by Arne Jacobsen, while the eastern tower is significantly taller.

The scheme is phased in terms of public access, with the most intensely permeable areas – the public library and retail – at the lower levels. Conversely, the higher levels are gradually becoming less permeable towards the upper sections which contain the hotel and conference facilities. The X-ing Towers are designed to transform the central area of Copenhagen around Town Hall Square and the central station, creating a destination in its own right rather than a transitory area.

The project is conceived as a dynamic and open form with an innovative environmental strategy. The complex is to a great extent naturally ventilated, and solar gain is reduced by adjustable sun-screening combined with a double façade where the internal layer using thermal glazing.
