Description:
Meeting Point Malmö is an ambitious project - a 45 metres tall, twelve-storey structure that is essentially flexible and can accommodate an exhibition and concert hall, as well as a restaurant, a hotel, retail outlets and cafés. Meeting Point Malmö will be a natural focal point of and a catalyst for the ongoing regeneration of the harbour area, a landmark buzzing with life and activities day and night.
The architectural expression of the new centre is rigorously geometric and restrained. It is a modern, progressive piece of architecture that nonetheless is designed to sit comfortably alongside its contemporary and historic neighbours. The building is located in the centre of Universitetsholmen which is a characterful student area adjacent to the harbour. The building’s façade is characterised by dark glazed panels enlivened by contrasting white window frames.
The architectural expression is simple and legible and particular attention has been paid to the way in which the new building connects with its urban context, including the creation of a new public square. The glass façade further emphasises the connection between internal and external space – and when weather permits it, a section of the façade at ground level slides away, reinforcing this sense of uninterrupted permeability and connection.
Meeting Point Malmö is designed to be an energy-efficient building, taking sustainability beyond existing legal requirements. Schmidt hammer lassen architects has designed an iconic building that will significantly enrich Malmö’s city life.
