Description:
The new terminal building in Aalborg Airport which situated in Lindholm north of the Limfjord has been rebuilt and extended to accommodate three departure halls and two arrivals halls. Besides, the aircraft gate and the area in front have been reorganised. The design is based on the idea of gathering the existing and the new activities in a simple architectural form and reinforcing contact with the open landscape surrounding the airport.
The new characteristic feature of the airport terminal is the new unifying, light and curved roof which incorporates the existing structure. The roof rests on boomerang-shaped laminated beams which are supported by light twin wooden columns placed in a characteristic repetitive pace in the long façade.
The new, fifteen-meter high glass façade serves as a transition to the runway side and the landscape towards west. Towards the entrance side at the south end of the hall, the existing façade elements have been replaced with slate-covered elements. An incision in this siding and the large window area mark the main entrance to the airport and the main hall, which runs the entire length of the terminal.
In the large main hall, all service functions are located in individual boxes, which are held free of the columns and the ceiling. At the north end, there are lounge areas and a cafeteria, and in the centre, there are arrival halls with a check-in area, ticketing/information and administration offices. The arrival and departure areas are organised in one open space, with glass walls that can subdivide the area in two and three separate rooms without losing the visual whole. From the departure halls, there is a view of the runways and the horizon.
