SHL to design new campus complex for the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute in Oslo

NGI – Norwegian Geotechnical Institute, Norway’s largest geotechnical specialist community and a leading centre of research and consultancy in engineering-related geosciences, selected Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects to design a new, contemporary campus. The approximately 30,000-square-metre new complex will not only create a knowledge axis in northern Oslo, but also introduce indoor and outdoor spaces for the public in an area that will see increased pedestrian and bicycle traffic in the coming years.

The campus complex will comprise two new buildings linked by a common entrance area across two levels, and will make room for up to 300 employees. The new NGI campus aims to create sustainable and flexible frameworks for staff, partners and clients, and attract start-up companies both inside and outside of the geoscience industry. The new buildings will serve as an open, dynamic meeting place for visitors and residents.

SHL wins Sports and Culture Campus in Gellerup, Aarhus (DK)

We have won the competition to design the Sports and Culture Campus in Gellerup (Aarhus, DK). The multi-use community project is a key component of the revitalisation of the Gellerup district, and will become an inspiring, welcoming and open destination for city residents and visitors.

A jury commissioned by Aarhus Kommune and Brabrand Boligforening selected our collaborative team that includes MASU Planning ApS, Loop Architects and COWI A/S to design the new Sports and Culture Campus located in a community in western Aarhus that is seeing an influx of redevelopment and revitalisation. The sprawling Gellerup Sports and Culture Campus will comprise a library, facilities for local residents, a playful activity house for circus, soccer, school and climbing – and potentially a unique public swimming pool. People Behavior: an industrial PhD project

In partnership with engineering firm Søren Jensen, we present industrial PhD project “People Behavior: Using Digital Twin of a Smart Building to Attain a Quantitative Understanding and Improvement of the User Experience.” Engineer and PhD candidate Andrew Khoudi will explore the impact of architecture on user experience using Dokk1, Scandinavia’s largest public library, as a case, and SHL’s Associate Partner Trine Berthold will act as industrial supervisor.

Innovationsfonden and Realdania—who jointly offer funding for business research projects within Smart Buildings and Smart Cities—approved the “People Behavior” industrial PhD project, which will give Khoudi access to partnerships and education in BLOXHUB among other resources.

Dokk1, Aarhus School of Architecture, Aarhus University, and the University of Bath are all partners on the project.

SHL wins University of Bristol Library

Together with British architecture studio Hawkins\Brown and engineering firm BuroHappold, we have been appointed to design the new £80 million University of Bristol Library, a landmark project for the university’s revitalization of its Clifton Campus.

The winning proposal integrates with the local built environment, capitalises on the location and views, and extends the landscaping from the Royal Fort Garden throughout the entire precinct. There is an ambition to include exhibition spaces, reading rooms and a café for the public to enjoy. The new library may also include a cultural collections centre to give access to the University’s world-class collections of historic books, art and theatre artefacts.

“Libraries make a difference in people’s lives. Not only for scholars, researchers and students, but for all citizens. They bring people and communities together – and they release potential. This building will be a beacon of knowledge and it will play a vital part in the life and experience of the University of Bristol and the city of Bristol itself.  It will be a sustainable, contemporary, welcoming, and fun place to be – while remaining in harmony with the rich traditions and history of its surroundings.” said Founding Partner Morten Schmidt.
